Protect Your Future Dental Hygiene is NOT just a job. It is a profession and as such requires lifelong commitments of several types. It is one of those few very select professions dedicated to treatment of living tissue and prevention of oral diseases. Registered Dental Hygienists by the very nature of their education, licensure, governing ethics and professional stature are committed, caring individuals who view the responsibilities of their chosen profession as very solemn and important. Completion of the dental hygiene education and earning of licensure is not the final step in what is required but is instead just the beginning. Keeping current with your profession, promoting your professional growth and advancement is still only just a part of the overall picture. When as a graduate RDH, you join the American Dental Hygienists' Association and Maryland Dental Hygienists' Association, you are taking a very important step in the lifelong journey of your professional career. When you identify with ADHA's purpose and when you experience ownership in a shared vision for dental hygiene, you find yourself doing your life's work instead of just "doing a job." Your membership helps to assure your professional stature with representation on a national and state level. You can expect to enjoy extensive, ongoing tangible and intangible benefits and an invaluable resource in a multitude of areas both professionally and personally. The American Dental Hygienists' Association is the largest professional organization representing the interests of Registered Dental Hygienists. It has been working with state dental hygiene organizations to fight the legislative and regulatory threats which allow preceptorship, de-value the RDH credential and endanger the future of the dental hygiene profession. By uniting and working together, the dental hygiene profession can speak with one strong voice to protect and to enhance the scope of practice and professional status you have worked so hard to achieve. Your ADHA membership and active participation denote your involvement as a steward of the profession. Your stewardship is your insurance for a rewarding career in dental hygiene. Your membership dues will help us to protect your livelihood and professional status. The Maryland Dental Hygienists' Association's ability to impact upon the dental hygiene scope of practice as well as the legislative processes as they apply to the profession of dental hygiene is contingent upon your membership. Your dues dollars and membership voice does indeed make a difference. The benefits of membership in ADHA/MDHA are limited only by the extent of your involvement. The Boar and the Fox from Aesop's Fables
"A fox chanced one day upon a boar carefully sharpening his tusks against a tree. 'Why,' he asked, 'do you prepare for a battle when there are no enemies in sight?' 'Because,' replied the boar, 'when enemies are in sight, I may not have time to sharpen my tusks.'"
