Maryland Dental Hygienists' Association
Well-being / Rehabilitation Program

Transformation: the process of changing the form or appearance.

The purpose of the MDHA Well-being/Rehabilitation Committee is to evaluate and provide assistance to any licensed Registered Dental Hygienist in the state of Maryland in need of treatment and support for physical, emotional or mental conditions and for alcohol and/or substance abuse that could compromise professional functioning or are impacting one's ability to function in a healthy manner. The Well-being/Rehabilitation Committee provides hygienists with initial problem assessments, referrals to local professional and community services, peer support and on-going monitoring.

The Goal of the Committee is to provide the opportunity and support necessary for hygienists to practice within the standards of acceptable care while obtaining professional assistance for impairment problems. The committee can provide an alternative to the State Board of Dental Examiners disciplinary process for hygienists.

Admission to the program is by three means:

Self-reports
Reports by employer, co-workers, family or friends
The Maryland State Board of dental Examiners

The Committee is: Voluntary:
No one can make you use the services even if you are MSBODE referred. It is totally up to you.

The Committee is Confidential:
We cannot tell anyone we are working with you unless you give us written permission, or unless you are an immanent threat to yourself or others or unless you are a MSBODE referral.

The Assessments are Free
The assessments are funded by the MSBODE

The Committee is not Punitive

The Well-being/ Rehabilitation Committee is not a part of the MSBODE disciplinary process. The MSBODE can refer to the committee. They can factor your participation and your cooperation into their decision around board action, but the committee does not determine what happens with licensure.

The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners provides regulatory oversight of all licensed dental health professionals in the state and accordingly has the gubernatorially mandated responsibility of ensuring that each license holder is practicing within the standards of acceptable and safe care.
